Our client is a leading investment management company with a strong presence in Asian and emerging markets equities and managed global fixed interest, credit and short term investment strategies, as well as multi-asset solutions. They wanted to complement this by establishing an Emerging Market Debt (EMD) investment team.
Blackwood worked closely with the CEO and, later, Head of EMD to build a team to focus on hard and local currency markets as well as corporate debt.
The first stage of the process was to provide a map of the global EMD universe, in order to help our client understand the competitive landscape; who was growing assets, how competitors structured their teams and importantly who the potential candidates in each team might be.
The second phase of the search focused on candidates with significant experience in local and hard currency markets as well as corporate debt. Additionally, candidates needed to have strong communication skills to support the head of the team in marketing the funds.
A team of five was hired; two fund managers to focus on hard currency sovereign debt, a local currency fund manager, a senior corporate debt analyst and a senior sovereign analyst. Two candidates relocated from Continental Europe to the UK.
